Dear Finley Golf Club,

As the leaves begin to change and cooler air settles in, we are excited to bring you the latest updates from Finley Golf Club.

Finley Feels

Our thoughts are with all of those affected by Hurricane Helene in Western Carolina. If you are interested in donating to help those affected, click here to learn more.

Agronomy

  • The lower putting green is now available to be used!
  • Our agronomy team is preparing for the Ruth’s Chris Event coming up on October 10th – 13th.
  • *We are still looking for volunteers for Ruth’s Chris. If you are interested in helping out, click here!
  • Once the tournament schedule slows down, the team will begin preparing for winter projects in the weeks to come.
  • The landscaping around the restroom on the front 9 will be finished this month!

Golf

Announcing our first annual Finley Invitational will be hosted on November 2nd & 3rd!

  • Teams must consist of two active members, in a traditional four-ball format, including men’s and women’s flights, competing for both gross and net awards.
  • Entry is $160 per team, and includes golf, Day One post-round lunch and Day Two post-round reception, both in Harvie’s. AM tee times on Saturday and AM shotgun start on Sunday.
  • Registration will open on Monday October 14th and close October 25th.

September Newsletter

Dear Finley Golf Club,

As we welcome September, we’re excited to bring you a newsletter packed with upcoming events, news, and updates from Finley.

Quick Updates

  • We will now be sending out a weekly email every Monday with reminders and updates for the week ahead to members.
  • As requested, we will be starting off of Hole 10 on Wednesdays.
  • At Finley, we are dedicated to being eco-friendly. We kindly request that you leave your recyclables in your cart while on the course, so we can ensure they are sorted into the appropriate bins at cart return!

Member Advisory Council

This month, we’ve launched our Member Advisory Council. Chosen by Finley Leadership, these individuals represent the various sub-groups within our member community.

The council members are here to share ideas, offer input, and suggest opportunities for improvement.

Agronomy

Talkin’ Turf with Kyle is back! September 18th at 7:30 am.

Lower Putter Green Update

We are on week 4 of the lower putting greens sprigs being laid. Progression has gone very well to date and we hope to have a full grow-in of this surface by mid October.

1st Tee Box Renovation Update

The recent addition of Zeon Zoysia tees on Hole 1 and a select few black tees used by the golf teams, has transitioned nicely over the past 3 weeks. The idea for this project is to advertise the Zeon Zoysia surface as a potential tee surface throughout the golf course. Relieving and drainage was also added to the areas.

Moving Forward

Our final sod project of the summer will take place September 4th. The area of concern is the approach of Hole 4 green. This area has struggled for many reasons since construction of this new hole. We are converting the current 419 Bermuda surface to the new hybrid Tahoma 31 Bermuda, which is the same variety of turf we currently have on collars.

Coming up this fall, the agronomy team will be hard at work preparing the course for the UNC women’s collegiate tournament. In addition to tournament preparations, we will be making our time sensitive pre-emergent applications across the whole golf course as well as our preventative spring dead spot treatments across tees, fairways and greens.

Golf & Events

We have many exciting golf opportunities this month including Golfing 4 the Gals on September 16th.

Last call to sign up for Girls Junior Golfers to sign up for our free clinic with LPGA Pro Leslie Cloots. The clinic will take place on September 7th from 3-5 pm. For more information, click the “Junior Girls Golf Clinic” button!

Once again, Coach Mack Brown has kindly invited the members of Finley Golf Club to attend a closed UNC Football Practice on Tuesday, September 17th. This will take place at the Indoor Practice Facility on campus. GO HEELS!

As summer begins its final act, let’s dive into a month full of opportunities, exciting updates, and a whole lot of sunshine.

Clubhouse

If you haven’t yet enjoyed a pre-round meal or a post-round drink at Harvie’s, you might have missed our recent furniture upgrade. Drop by soon to check it out and enjoy a cold beverage!

With the school year around the corner, Finley is the perfect place to do your back-to-school shopping. Come by to see all of our new merchandise, including Peter Millar, Stitch, Johnnie-O, lululemon, and more!

Equipment Performance Studio

Our brand-new Equipment Performance Studio, located at the range, will be open for putter fittings and all of your equipment needs on Thursday, August 15th!

Agronomy

This time of year, please be mindful when you are in the bunkers. Yellow jackets tend to nest in the sand, particularly around the edges of bunkers. Our agronomy crew is doing everything they can to stay ahead of it.

1st Tee Box Renovation

We are converting 3 of the 4 tee boxes on Hole 1 to Zeon Zoysia. Zeon provides a tougher, tighter surface that can be helpful to high traffic areas, along with better year around aesthetics. We will evaluate the health of the first tee over the next few months and determine if Zeon is a long-term candidate to replace some of our high traffic tee boxes.

Lower Putter Green

The sod on the lower putting green was used to repair thin and struggling areas throughout the course. In the future, damaged turf will be replaced from our new TifEagle nursery that has now matured. On August 1st, TifEagle sprigs were laid on the lower putting green and will be continuously monitored by the agronomy team for the next 8 weeks. We will continue to provide updates throughout the process.

Golf

We are excited to announce the dates for our fall Member-Member. The event will take place on the weekend of November 2nd & 3rd. We will provide further details and registration information as we get closer to the event date.

While you are enjoying the 2024 Olympics, keep an eye out for Finley’s Director of Instruction, Nate Parry, while he is caddying for Ana Belac on Team Slovenia!

Calling all Girls Junior Golfers!

This September, we are hosting a free clinic for girls ages 6-17! This clinic takes place on September 7th from 3-5pm. To sign up, click here!

July Newsletter

Dear Finley Golf Club,

Happy July! We hope you spend this month relaxing and enjoying the sunshine!

With the start of a new fiscal year, we eagerly anticipate the arrival of fresh merchandise!

Agronomy

Please note the schedule of our July closure:

  • The golf course will be closed July 1st – July 14th
  • All facilities including the golf shop are closed from July 1st – July 5th.
  • Practice amenities will be open on Saturday July 6th – July 14th.
  • The golf shop will be open July 6th – July 14th from 12pm – 6pm daily.

During the closure time, our agronomy team will be hard at work aerating the course to ensure pristine playing conditions!
